Jules Leotard the acrobat was the man behind the leotard. The French performer who was born in 1839 became popular for his acrobatics.

Jules Leotard wore the skin tight outfit that we now know as the leotard during his performances. Jules Leotard died young at the age of 28. His death was most likely caused by smallpox or cholera. At the time of Leotard’s performances his outfit was called a maillot.
