Jules Leotard wore the skin tight outfit that we now know as the leotard during his performances. Jules Leotard died young at the age of 28. His death was most likely caused by smallpox or cholera. At the time of Leotard’s performances his outfit was called a maillot.

Jules Leotard was best known for his flying trapeze act. Which at the time there were no safety nets just mattresses to break the fall.
